Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy is part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Currently, the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy offers these study programs:
- Bachelor Degree in “Nursing”,
- Bachelor Degree in “Physiotherapy”
- Professional Master in “Surgical Nursing”
- Professional Master in “Manual Therapy”.
The academic staff consists of specialists in the field of medicine and physiotherapy who obtain different scientific titles and degrees. The wide experience of academic staff in the field of medicine and physiotherapy indicates a serious and effective preparation in the teaching process.
For the academic year 2019-2020, Albanian University has applied to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth for the opening of a new study program to be offered by the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy:
- Professional Master in “Nursing of Chronic Diseases and Gerodontology”
Albanian University is awaiting the approval of the MASR for the opening of this program.
Bachelor Degree in “Nursing”
The Bachelor Degree in “Nursing” in Albanian University is opened with Order no. 411, dated 25.08.2011 by the Ministry of Education and Science and accredited by ASCAL with Accreditation Board Decision no. 31, dated 19.05.2017. This program aims to prepare students who have acquired basic knowledge and skills needed to master the capabilities that are needed be a general nurse. The curriculum comprising this study program has a regular three-year duration and is designed to equip students in the first year of study with the knowledge of the core subjects of each field of medicine such as: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc. In addition to these core subjects, students have the opportunity to acquire knowledge of integration subjects, such as: statistics, computer science and foreign language, knowledge that will complete the student’s knowledge in practicing the profession. During the second and third year students will be provided with specific and practical knowledge, which will complete the vocational training of the general nurse.
This knowledge will serve the students to strengthen the practical sense of work. Students at the end of the program will be able to undertake further advanced studies in specialized areas that are valid for the Albanian specificity and professionals of this field in Albania. The academic knowledge provided by this study program aims to create, in addition to the model of general nursing care, and the provision of knowledge in specific areas of medical sciences in order that this study program will not only guide the students on the labor market but also create the basics and knowledge for further specializations.
Bachelor Degree in “Physiotherapy”
The Bachelor Degree in “Physiotherapy” is open with Order no. 199, dated 16.05.2012 by the Ministry of Education and Science and accredited by ASCAL with Accreditation Board Decision no. 30, dated 19.05.2017. This program includes theoretical and practical subjects in the field of “Physiotherapy” and the primary focus is to prepare general physiotherapists. This study program aims to provide students with professional knowledge in practicing the physiotherapist’s profession in a 3-year cycle of study, as well as the knowledge gained in the Bachelor study, enable the student to continue his Master studies.
The student obtains theoretical knowledge in the classroom where contemporary teaching and practical methods are used in specialized physiotherapy centers.
At the end of the 3-year cycle the students will be able to apply professional methods for treatment, prevention and rehabilitation in body injuries, pathologies for various causes born or acquired in patients at specialized centers or clinics.
Professional Master in “Manual Therapy”
The Master’s Degree Program in “Manual Therapy” is opened with Order no. 671, dated 12.10.2018 by the Ministry of Education and Science. This program is a theoretical-practical combination in which the training base is in line with European standards. This program aims to promote an integrated therapeutic culture within manual therapy, based on principles; a biopsychosocial vision of the patient’s problem, a clinical teaching methodology combining research evidence and empirical evidence, a research methodology articulated in function of various problems and epistemological basics of bibliographic references, a positive comparison with different schools and the traditions of manual therapy .
In this program they have the opportunity to study Physiotherapists who have completed three years of education (first Bachelor cycle) in the Physiotherapy branch and seek to further deepen their knowledge in a specialty closer to that of Manual Therapy.
The curriculum of this study program has a regular scheduled duration of 2 semesters and a total of 60 Credits. The course program in the first semester of the study is designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge of theoretical level such as Kinesiology, Applied Biomedicine, Manual Therapy Theory by alternating with practical level knowledge such as subjects Methodology of Manual Therapy and Professional Practice.
In addition to these subjects, students have the opportunity to acquire specific knowledge related to specialties such as: Neurology, Neurophysiology and in the second semester they acquire knowledge on Orthopedics, Sports Traumatology and Rheumatology. In the second semester students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge closely related to Rehabilitation in Therapy During the two semesters is planned an amount of hours of Professional Practice which will complete the vocational training in Manual Therapy.
Physiotherapist who successfully completes the Professional Master Thesis in “Manual Therapy”: will possess a high standard of manual skills in executing maneuvers and functional and therapeutic evaluation, will be able to choose an adaptive technique from
therapeutic variations as a result of a clinical staff integration process with the best available scientific evidence based on evidence based medical principles, the most appropriate therapeutic assessment procedures for particular patients, will be able to intervene to rehabilitate a patient suffering from musculoskeletal disorders will formulate a patient-based prognosis prepared based on the International Classification of Functioning (ICF).
Professional Master in “Nursing of Chronic Illness and Gerodontology” *
The Master’s Degree Program in “Nursing of Chronic Diseases and Gerodontology”. aims to apply in practice the knowledge and skills acquired in theoretical and practical courses of a professional character from the field of Nursing of Chronic Disease and Gerodontology. aiming at the further preparation or qualification of Nursing students.
In this program they have the opportunity to study Nursing who have completed three years of education (first Bachelor cycle) in the Nursing branch and seek to further deepen their knowledge in a narrower specialty of Nursing of Chronic Disease and Gerodontology.
The curriculum of this study program has a regular scheduled duration of 2 semesters and a total of 60 Credits. The course program in the first semester of the study is designed to enable students to acquire in-depth knowledge of theoretical level, such as Physiopathology, Clinical Pharmacology. In addition to these subjects, students have the opportunity to acquire specific knowledge related to specialties such as Nursing in Neurology, Nursing in Psychiatry, Geriatric Nursing, Nursing in Cardiology, Palliative Nursing in the second semester acquire knowledge on Nursing in Occupational Therapy, Nursing in Specialisties. In the second semester students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge closely related to Nursing and Outpatient Services at Geriartry as a novelty of the curriculum making it contemporary.
During the two semesters, a number of hours of Professional Practice is planned, which will complete vocational training in “Nursing of Chronic Diseases and Gerodontology”.
* Albanian University is awaiting the approval of the MASR for the opening of the program in the academic year 2019-2020.
Extracurricular Activities of the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy
In the academic year 2012-2013 the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy has organized 2 scientific conferences at the Departmental Department on “HIV-AIDS, Prevention and Treatment”. “Statistics in our country”, December 7, 2012 in Tirana; “Nursing in Primary Health Care”, May 31, 2013 in Berat and 1 scientific conference at the Faculty of Medical Sciences with referrals of students in collaboration with department professors, with the following: “Scientific Research in the Student Perspective”, 10 May 2013 in Tirana .
In the academic year 2013-2014 the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy has continued with the tradition of scientific conferences both in the engagement of students and academic staff. The conferences held during this academic year are: Student Conference on “Scientific Writing in a Student’s View”, 25 April 2014, in Tirana and the third scientific conference on “Nursing in Geriatric Care” on May 30, 2014 at the Fieri branch.
While for the academic year 2014-2015 the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy has continued with the progress of the first scientific conferences in two perspectives both in the engagement of students and academic staff. The conferences that took place during this academic year are: student conferences with “New Challenges in Modern Medicine”, on 17 April 2015 in Tirana and the fourth scientific conference with “Nursing in neurological care” on 26 June 2015, Tirana.
For the academic year 2015-2016, the department organized 1 open lecture on “Therapy in Physiotherapy” on 16.01.2016, with the participation of Italian and Albanian lecturers. The 5-th Scientific Conference on “Obstetric-Gynecology Health Care” on 23 April 2016 and the Faculty Conference on “Innovative Innovations in the Field of Medicine” on 28.04.2016.
For the academic year 2016-2017, the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy has devoted special importance to activities and scientific research, always in order to raise the creative, scientific and pedagogical values, always in line with modern times. Teaching and research work are inseparable from the demands of society for rapid and continuous development. The Department has developed an Open Lecture on “Secondary Prevention in Physiotherapy, the role of physiotherapist in screening of patients at pediatric age”, on March 1, 2017, also on 12 April 2017, organized another open lecture on the topic: “First patient aid in cardiac arrest”. Like every academic year, the department organized on March 24, 2017 a student conference on “Scientific Research in a Student’s View”. The Department in cooperation with the Professional Training Center I’LINGUA organized on 28 March 2017 and 19 April 2017 two Conferences on “Employment Information Conference in Germany” for students of Nursing and Physiotherapy who expressed interest in employment in Germany. On 21, 22 April 2017, the Department organized the 1st International Conference on “Clinical and Surgical Medical Sciences” with the participation of field professionals.
Already, the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy is in preparation for the conferences of the academic year 2018-2019. In addition, on all listed health related dates, the Department activates students to offer different services according to pathologies.
