The Department of Education and English is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. It was created in 2010. Currently, the Department of Education and English offers three first cycle study programs of bachelor’s degree and a second cycle program, Master in Pedagogy with two profiles: “Didactics” and “Education Management” “. For the academic year 2019-2020, Albanian University has applied to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth for the opening of two new study programs which will be offered by the Department of Education and English: Professional Master in “English Language” with two profiles: “British and American Studies ” and “Translation”; and a professional program “Professional Care for Children”.
Bachelor Degree in “Primary Education Teaching”
The Bachelor program in the “Primary Education Teaching” is licensed by the MoES Order no. 251, dated 02.06.2011 and accredited by Decision of Accreditation Board of ASCAL Nr. 34, dated 19.05.2017.
This program prepares teachers for pre-primary education classes or grades I-V. This program has as its main objective the equipping of students with the basic knowledge and skills that serve in the daily work of an educator. In addition, the “Primary Education Teaching” study program enables students to deepen their knowledge for the second level studies at the Master’s Degree in Pedagogy with two profiles: “Didactics” and “Education Management”.
The Bachelor Program in the “Primary Education Teaching” aims to create future skilled staff working on the national labor market:
- In public or private education schools as elementary school teachers of the 9-year basic education;
- In regional education directorates or municipal office education as specialists in primary education;
- In public or private agencies as primary education specialists;
- In specialized NGOs for educational work as trainers and counselors for the education of children aged 6-11 years.
Bachelor Degree in “Teacher for Preschool Education”
The Bachelor study program in “Teacher for Preschool Education” was licensed by the MoES Order no. 251, dated 02.06.2011 and accredited by Decision of Accreditation Board of ASCAL Nr. 35, dated 19.05.2017.
This program consists in the preparation of teachers who will work with children aged 3-7 who are enrolled in public and private daycare institutions, such as child care centers, kindergartens, etc. Students who will graduate in the Bachelor program at “Teaching for Preschool Education” will have the following opportunities in the labor market:
- in public and private institutions of preschool education (kindergartens) as teachers or kindergarten educators;
- in public and private institutions of preschool education (kindergartens) as managers or managers;
- in private institutions of pre-school (childcare center) as teachers, educators or carers;
- in the regional education directorates / educational offices as well as municipal education centers as specialists in pre-school education.
Bachelor Degree in “English”
The Bachelor study program in “English” is licensed by the MoES Order no. 199, dated 16.05.2012 and accredited by Decision of Accreditation Board of ASCAL no. 50, dated 10.07.2017.
This program, provided by the Department of Education and English, is a first cycle study program with a normal duration of 3 years, 180 credits (ECTS) and the form of study is full-time. The program aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of English and American language and culture. At the end of the 3-year program, in order to acquire the Bachelor’s Degree, students will have acquired knowledge aimed at the formation of basic theoretical knowledge and habits of the practical use of English language, taking into consideration the needs of the labor market for professionals in the English language. In addition, this program provides students with the basic knowledge for further development in specialized programs detailed for further studies of English language, at the masters level or specific training courses.
At the end of their studies the graduates can work in;
- Governmental or non-governmental institutions requiring English-language interpreters in the role of translators or as assistants in projects that work mainly with English language;
- Regional education administration;
- Various service agencies;
- Foreign language learning centers;
- Media institutions;
- International organizations.
Professional Master Degree in “Pedagogy” with profiles
The Master’s Degree Program in “Pedagogy” is offered in two profiles: “Didactics” and “Education Management”.
This program is licensed with DCM no. 56, dated 05/07/2019 and accredited by MoES by Order no. 29, dated 31.01.2013. This study program has been reorganized into 60 credits that take place in one academic year, based on Law 80/2015, and in compliance with applicable law articles.
The “Education Management” students will be equipped with the concepts, ideas and theoretical principles of education management. They also have access to sufficient knowledge of legislation, strategies and education policies, and school and education policies, as well as shaping skills and competences for school and education management and management activities.
The “Didactics” profile students will understand the theory and practice of what “successful” teaching means will understand the importance of effective classroom management to achieve a “successful learning” and will be familiar with the components, techniques and teaching strategies. It is very important that students are updated with the competences that a student should acquire during the lesson as well as the contemporary techniques the teacher should have to convey these competences in pre-university education.
For the academic year 2019-2020, Albanian University has applied to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth for the opening of two new study programs that will be provided by the Department of Education and English:
- Professional Master in “English Language” with profiles:
- “British and American Studies”, 2. “Translation”,
- Professional program “Professional care for children”.
Albanian University is awaiting the approval by the MASR.
Professional Master Degree in “English Language”, profiling in “British and American Studies”
This one-year study program, consisting of 60 ECTS, offers a profound knowledge of the field of English and American. The subject profile is based on English and American history and culture; the special link between the two most powerful states in the world; the connection of these two countries with the rest of the world, with the EU and international institutions; their history and literary, cultural, social, scientific, etc. impact over the centuries, but also during the contemporary period.
For this reason, the program contains the basic subjects of history, culture, literature, governance, institutions, language, and globalist ties with other states. Courses reveal profound professional knowledge of the preparation for future English and American studies specialists.
At the end of the Bachelor study, the previous cycle of studies, English language students have been provided with general knowledge of history, language, culture and literature in this study program. This program offers a deepening of knowledge on the basic aspects of the field of study of British and American studies.
In addition, the courses are designed in such a way that students, the future specialists, receive professional knowledge and information, and academic and analytical skills on British and American Studies.
Professional Master Degree in “English Language”, profiling in “Translation”
This study program, extended in one year, and consisting of 60 ECTS, prepares literary and professional translators and interdisciplinary translators; translators for literary and professional works; translators and interpreters in public and private institutions, multilingual and multicultural mediators in international organizations and institutions, foreign and domestic associations, public administration employees, employees in various NGOs, local government structures, mediators in public relations, associates tourists in the country and abroad, translators for the printed, visual and electronic media, multilingual and multicultural mediators in the field of culture, history, literature, international relations, diplomacy, etc.
At the end of the Bachelor study, the previous cycle of studies, English language students were provided with general knowledge of the theory of translation and analysis of text as well as language, culture and literature in this study program subjects are a deepening of knowledge on the fundamental aspects of the translation field.
In addition, the courses are designed in such a way that the students, the future specialists receive professional knowledge and information, practical, theoretical, academic and analytical skills on translation.
Professional program “Professional care for children”
This program aims at equipping students with appropriate theoretical knowledge and practical skills to achieve high standards in early childhood services by applying theories and practices of learning and care in relation to age group characteristics, individual characteristics of children, with the objectives of inclusive education, with the advantages of education in our country and the role as professionals in a changing social context.
This study program focuses on the preparation of professionals who will work with children of early childhood, but not only. The child’s professional care continues further, providing a professional support to the children in their educational formation, as well as in the cultivation of knowledge in accordance with the age of the child. The employment opportunities for students who will complete this study program start from public and private school institutions, but also in childcare centers, kindergartens, etc.
